Our Story

Not just an institution — a movement

Since its inception in February 2015, Alive Albinism Initiative (AAI) has been an unwavering beacon of innovation, diversity, and creative expression. We are not just an institution: we are a movement, driven by the passion of three remarkable Zimbabweans with backgrounds as varied and vibrant as the hues on an artist's palette.

As a non-profit organisation, AAI embodies our founders' profound commitment to cultivating artistic excellence and personal growth. Rooted in the rich tapestry of Zimbabwean culture, AAI stands as a specialized institution of Arts, reshaping education by seamlessly blending academic rigor with boundless creative exploration.

Our core objective is clear: to empower emerging talents with an integrated academic and arts education program that extends beyond the High School phase. This intensive curriculum serves as a crucible for the transformation of passionate individuals into entrepreneurial artists. Through an innovative synthesis of rigorous learning and immersive artistic endeavours, AAI nurtures well-rounded, forward-thinking creators who are poised to leave an indelible mark on the world.

The Alive Albinism Initiative emerged from a potent collaboration of individuals fueled by a shared love for the arts. Pooling our unique expertise in arts, business, and education, we formed a collective force that envisioned a new era of artistic learning — one that empowers artists as entrepreneurial trailblazers, shaping the future of the arts industry with creativity, innovation, and business acumen.

Gwenlisa Mushonga

Managing Director & Founder

Gwenlisa Mushonga is a visionary artist leader, creative advocate, and community empowerment practitioner dedicated to advancing inclusive artistic expression and cultural development within Zimbabwe's creative industry. With a strong passion for the transformative power of the arts, she has consistently championed platforms that empower emerging creatives, promote diversity, and amplify marginalized voices, particularly those of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

Her leadership within the arts sector is rooted in fostering innovation, collaboration, and social impact through creative storytelling, performance arts, cultural engagement, and advocacy initiatives that inspire meaningful community participation. Gwenlisa strongly believes that the arts are not only a vehicle for entertainment, but also a powerful tool for education, healing, identity preservation, and social transformation.

Beyond her artistic leadership, Gwenlisa is also passionate about youth empowerment, disability inclusion, and the integration of digital technologies within the creative economy. Her vision is centred on building sustainable creative ecosystems that celebrate culture, inspire innovation, and create lasting impact within local and regional communities.

Gamuchirai Uzande

Executive Director

Gamuchirai Uzande is a dynamic creative professional and emerging advocate within Zimbabwe's arts and cultural sector, recognized for her passion for artistic expression, youth empowerment, and creative innovation. Her work reflects a strong commitment to advancing the visibility of Zimbabwean arts through multidisciplinary engagement in visual arts, spoken word, creative storytelling, and digital artistic platforms.

Drawing inspiration from the evolving African creative economy, she has consistently championed the importance of culture, identity, and youth participation in the arts industry. She is particularly interested in the intersection of creativity, technology, and social impact, advocating for the use of digital platforms to amplify artistic voices and expand opportunities for emerging creatives.

Brian M. K. Sithole

Community Advocate & Social Inclusion Practitioner

Brian M. K. Sithole is a passionate community advocate, creative development supporter, and social inclusion practitioner committed to advancing disability rights, youth empowerment, and inclusive participation within Zimbabwe's arts and cultural sector. His work focuses on creating opportunities that empower marginalized communities, particularly persons with disabilities, through creative expression, leadership development, and community engagement.

With a strong interest in the intersection of art, advocacy, and digital innovation, Brian actively supports initiatives that use creativity as a platform for awareness creation, education, and empowerment. Beyond the arts and inclusion sector, he is dedicated to youth mentorship, digital literacy, and community development initiatives that encourage meaningful participation in social and economic development.

Nyasha Nhau

Creative Advocate & Community Development Practitioner

Nyasha Nhau is a dedicated creative advocate, community development practitioner, and emerging leader in disability inclusion and the arts sector, committed to using creativity and storytelling as powerful tools for social change and empowerment. Nyasha works to promote the participation and visibility of persons with disabilities within Zimbabwe's cultural and creative industries, advocating for equal access, representation, and opportunities for marginalized communities.

The arts, Nyasha believes, provide an important avenue for challenging stereotypes, fostering dialogue, and amplifying the lived experiences of persons with disabilities in society. That vision is centred on building inclusive communities where creativity, culture, and human dignity are celebrated, and where persons with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in social, cultural, and economic development.

Gladman Chikwari

Disability Inclusion Advocate & Digital Development Strategist

Gladman Chikwari is a passionate disability inclusion advocate, creative arts supporter, and digital development strategist dedicated to advancing the rights, visibility, and empowerment of persons with disabilities through art, technology, and community engagement. His work strongly focuses on promoting inclusive creative spaces that amplify the voices and talents of marginalized communities, particularly persons with disabilities and individuals with albinism within Zimbabwe and across the region.

Through his leadership in community development and digital advocacy initiatives, Gladman has actively championed the integration of arts, culture, and emerging technologies as tools for social transformation, awareness creation, and inclusive participation. His advocacy supports accessible platforms that enable creatives with disabilities to showcase their talents, tell authentic stories, and participate meaningfully in cultural and digital economies.
